Give Yourself The Same Grace You Give Everyone Else
Sweet friend, pull up a chair for a minute. Today I want to talk about something that changed everything for me: learning to give yourself grace.”
When was the last time you spoke to yourself with grace? Really think about it. You probably know exactly what to say when a friend is struggling — you tell her she’s doing her best, that she’s allowed to make mistakes, that she’s still worthy of love even on her hardest days. You wrap her in patience without even thinking twice.
But when it’s you who stumbles? When you forget something important, snap at someone you love, or fall short of the standard you set for yourself? That voice in your head turns sharp. Critical. Unkind in a way you would never, ever allow yourself to be with someone you cherish.
I’ve been there more times than I can count, sweet friend. And I want you to know — you deserve the same grace you so freely give everyone else.
How God Talks To You
Think for a moment about how God speaks to you. Not with shame. Not with a running list of your failures held over your head. He speaks with love. With patience. With a gentleness that wraps around you even on your messiest, most unraveled days.
Lamentations 3:22-23 scripture reminds us that His mercies are new every single morning — not because we’ve earned them, but because that’s simply who He is. He doesn’t wait for you to clean yourself up before He loves you. He just loves you. Right now. Right where you are.
That’s the kind of grace I want you to start offering yourself.
Talk To Yourself The Way God Talks To You
Here’s what I’ve learned, sweet friend: the way we talk to ourselves becomes the lens through which we see everything else. If your inner voice is harsh, the whole world starts to feel harsh too. But if you can soften that voice — even just a little — everything begins to shift.
So today, try this. When you make a mistake, offer yourself forgiveness instead of judgment. When you feel like you’re not enough, remind yourself that you are deeply, wildly loved exactly as you are. When the day feels heavy and you’re tempted to spiral into everything you “should” be doing better, speak hope over yourself instead of despair.
Psalm 103:8-14 tells us that God is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and rich in love — and that He knows how we are formed, He remembers that we are dust. He’s not surprised by your imperfections, sweet friend. He never expected perfection from you in the first place. So why are you expecting it from yourself?
You Are Not Behind
I know it’s easy to look around at everyone else’s highlight reel and feel like you’re falling short. Like you should be further along, doing more, handling life with more grace than you currently feel capable of. But hear me on this — you are not behind. You are not failing. You are exactly where you need to be, growing exactly how you’re meant to grow, in God’s perfect timing.
<a href=”https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Philippians%201%3A6″ target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow noopener”>Philippians 1:6</a> promises that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion. That’s not a verse about pressure — it’s a verse about peace. You don’t have to have it all figured out today. You just have to keep showing up, keep trying, and keep extending yourself a little grace along the way.
A Gentle Reminder For Today
So sweet friend, here’s your gentle nudge for today: the next time that critical voice creeps in, pause. Take a breath. And ask yourself — would I say this to someone I love? If the answer is no, it’s time to choose a softer, kinder, more grace-filled word for yourself instead.
You give grace so freely to everyone around you. Today, give it to yourself too. You’ve more than earned it.
What’s one kind thing you can say to yourself today? I’d love for you to share it in the comments below — I read every single one, and I’d love to cheer you on. 💜
With love and faith, Marilyn
