When God Closes A Door — Trusting His Plan Even When It Hurts

Have you ever had a door close in your life — a job, a relationship, an opportunity — and felt your heart drop straight to the floor? Sweet friend, if you are nodding your head right now, this post is written just for you. Because today we are going to talk about one of the hardest things faith asks of us — trusting God when a door slams shut and we have absolutely no idea why.

Pull up a chair. Let’s talk about this together.

When God Closes A Door, It Feels Personal

Let’s be real for a moment. When something doesn’t work out — when the answer is no, when the relationship ends, when the dream falls apart — it hurts. And it’s okay to admit that. God doesn’t ask us to pretend we aren’t hurting. He asks us to bring that hurt straight to Him.

But here is what I want you to hold onto today, sweet friend. A closed door is not proof that God has forgotten you. It is not proof that you did something wrong. And it is absolutely not proof that good things aren’t coming for you.

Sometimes a closed door is the most loving thing God can do for us — even when it doesn’t feel that way in the moment.

Truth 1 — God Closes Doors To Protect You

There are doors in my own life I am so grateful never opened. I couldn’t see it at the time. I cried over those closed doors. I questioned and worried and wondered what was wrong with me. But looking back now? I can see God’s fingerprints all over those moments. He was protecting me from something I didn’t have the eyes to see yet.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+3%3A5-6&version=NIV)

He sees what we cannot see. And sometimes the greatest act of love is a closed door standing between us and something that would have hurt us deeply.

Truth 2 — God Closes Doors To Redirect You

Sweet friend, have you ever been so focused on one direction that you couldn’t even imagine another way? That was me more times than I can count. But God has a beautiful habit of redirecting our steps even when we think we know exactly where we’re going.

When a door closes, it doesn’t mean the journey is over. It means God is redirecting your feet toward a path that leads somewhere better. Sometimes we can’t find the open door because we are still standing in front of the closed one, staring at it, willing it to swing back open.

What if you turned around? What if the open door is right behind you?

Truth 3 — God Closes Doors To Prepare You

Here is one of my favorite faith truths, and I want you to really sit with this one. Sometimes God closes a door not because you aren’t ready for good things — but because the good thing He has planned for you isn’t quite ready yet. And neither are you.

The waiting space — that hallway between the closed door and the open one — is not wasted time. It is preparation time. God is doing something in you during the in-between. He is building your character, deepening your faith, and equipping you with everything you are going to need for what comes next.

Don’t rush the hallway, sweet friend. God is working there too.

Truth 4 — God’s No Is Always Leading To A Better Yes

Revelation 3:8 tells us, “See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut.” (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation+3%3A8&version=NIV)

I love this verse so much because it is a reminder that when God has a door for you — a real, God-ordained, purposeful door — nothing can keep it closed. No person, no circumstance, no mistake, no delay. When it is meant for you, it will open.

And every door that closes is simply redirecting you toward the one that was always meant to swing wide open just for you.

That closed door you’re grieving today? It might be the very thing that leads you straight to the greatest yes of your life.

Truth 5 — You Are Not Alone In The Hallway

I think one of the hardest parts of a closed door is the loneliness of standing in that hallway waiting. It can feel like everyone else has found their open door and you are the only one still waiting in the in-between.

Sweet friend, you are not alone. Not even close.

Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+8%3A28&version=NIV)

All things. Not some things. Not the easy things. ALL things — including the closed doors, the hard seasons, and the long hallways — are being worked together for your good by a God who loves you more than you can possibly imagine.

You are not forgotten. You are not behind. You are right where God needs you to be.

What To Do When You’re Standing In The Hallway

So what do we actually do when a door closes and we are left standing there not knowing what comes next? Here are three gentle reminders for the hallway:

Pray first. Before you panic, before you problem-solve, before you spiral — talk to God. Tell Him exactly how you feel. He already knows, but He loves to hear your heart.

Look for the open door. Sometimes we miss the open door because we are too focused on the closed one. Lift your eyes, sweet friend. Look around. God may already be showing you the next step.

Trust the process. This is the hardest one, isn’t it? But trusting God in the hallway is one of the most powerful acts of faith you can offer Him. It says, “God, I don’t understand this, but I trust YOU.” And that kind of trust? It moves mountains.

A Closing Word From My Heart

Sweet friend, wherever you are today — whether you are grieving a closed door or standing in a long hallway wondering what comes next — I want you to know that God has not forgotten you. He is not finished with your story. And the best chapters may be the ones still waiting to be written.

A closed door is not the end. It is an invitation to trust.

Keep walking forward in faith. Your open door is coming. 🚪✨💜

I am praying for you today.

With so much love, Marilyn 💜
