The Three Gates of Speech: A Gentle Reminder Before You Speak
The three gates of speech are a simple, beautiful practice: before you say a word, ask yourself if it is true, if it is necessary, and if it is kind. Sweet friend, I’m so glad you’re here today, because this is one of those little reminders that can change a whole day, and maybe even a whole relationship.
Why the Three Gates of Speech Matter
We all have moments we’d love to take back. A sharp answer when we were tired, a comment that slipped out too fast, a word said in frustration that landed harder than we meant. Words can’t be un-spoken, but the beautiful news is that we can learn to pause before they leave our lips. That pause is where grace lives.
The First Gate of Speech: Is It True?
Honesty is the foundation. Before you speak, take a moment to ask yourself whether what you’re about to say is really true, or whether it’s a guess, an assumption, or something you heard secondhand. So much hurt begins with words that were never quite accurate. When we stick to what we truly know, we protect the people we love and we protect our own peace of mind.
The Second Gate of Speech: Is It Necessary?
This one is a little harder, isn’t it? Something can be true and still not need to be said. Ask yourself whether your words will help, heal, or move things forward. If they won’t, you’re allowed to let them go. Sometimes the most loving thing you can offer is a quiet, listening heart.
The Third Gate of Speech: Is It Kind?
Kindness is the gate that changes everything. Even a hard truth can be spoken gently. Scripture reminds us, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” (Ephesians 4:29) When your words pass through kindness, they become a gift to whoever receives them.
Living the Three Gates of Speech Every Day
You don’t have to get it perfect. Start small. Maybe today you pause before answering a text, or take a breath before responding to someone who’s frustrated you. Each time you walk through those three gates, you’re planting a little garden of peace around you. And when you do slip (we all do!), give yourself the same grace God gives you. Tomorrow is a brand new day to try again. 💜
You are such a blessing to the people around you, and your words have more power to brighten someone’s day than you may ever know.
Which of the three gates is hardest for you to pass through? Share it in the comments. I’d love to hear from you. 👇
