Start Writing Your Book: 5 Ways to Beat Fear Today
Sweet friend, if you’ve ever dreamed of writing a book, I want you to start writing your book today, even if all you have is one sentence and a whole lot of nerves. 💜
Can I be real with you for a moment?
There’s a story tucked away inside you. Maybe you’ve carried it for years. Maybe it shows up when the house is quiet, whispering, “What if?” And maybe, just maybe, the fear is louder than the dream. What if no one likes it? What if it doesn’t sell? What if I’m not good enough?
I know that feeling well. I’ve stared at a blank page wondering if anyone would ever care to read what I wrote. So pull up a chair, grab your coffee, and let’s talk about why you can quiet that fear and finally begin.
1. Start Writing Your Book Before You Feel Ready
Here’s a secret nobody tells you: nobody feels ready. Not the first-time author, and not the one with a shelf full of books.
If you wait until the fear disappears, you may wait forever. The courage comes after you begin, not before. So write one sentence. Just one. Then write another tomorrow. Starting small is still starting, sweet friend, and it counts.
2. Let Go of Perfect
Your first draft is not supposed to be perfect. It’s supposed to exist.
Every book you’ve ever loved began as a messy, imperfect draft. Editing is where the polish happens, but you can’t polish a page that was never written. Give yourself permission to write badly so you can eventually write beautifully.
3. Give Yourself the Gift of Time
It might take you a few months. It might take you a few years. Either way, you’re allowed to go at your own pace.
There’s no clock on your dream, and nobody is grading you. Some seasons you’ll write for hours, and some seasons you’ll write a paragraph and call it a win. Keep showing up, even in small ways, and the pages will add up faster than you think.
4. Don’t Let “What If No One Likes It?” Win
I’m going to say something gently: someone out there is waiting for your story.
Maybe it’s the woman who needs the laughter. Maybe it’s the friend who needs the reminder that second chances are real. Not everyone will love your book, and that’s okay, because your book isn’t meant for everyone. It’s meant for the reader who needs it. Don’t let fear of a few opinions keep your story from the people who are waiting for it.
5. Remember How It Will Feel
Here’s what I want you to hold onto on the hard days: nothing compares to holding your own book in your hands for the very first time.
The weight of it. The cover you dreamed about. Your name right there on the front. It is the feeling of a dream come true, and I promise you, every blank page, every doubt, and every late night is worth it.
My Own “What If” Story
My novel, I Saw The Signs I Just Ignored Them, started as a “what if” too. What if four girlfriends took a European cruise to celebrate their 50th birthdays, never imagining that playing their childhood game of pretend could be what saves their lives? 🚢
That one little question became a story, and that story became a real book I can hold in my hands. If I can do it, sweet friend, so can you.
So today, I’d love for you to do just one thing: open a blank page and type the first line. Your story matters, your voice matters, and the world is a little brighter with you in it.
I’d love to hear from you in the comments. What story are you dreaming of writing? Let’s cheer each other on! 💜
With love and faith,
Marilyn
