You’ve Been Running On Empty And Your Soul Knows It
Sweet friend, let me ask you something — and I want you to answer it from your heart, not your head. If you’ve been feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and stretched too thin, maybe this is your sign to slow down. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Right now.
When was the last time you truly rested? Not just sat down because your body gave out. Not just fell asleep because you couldn’t keep your eyes open one more second. But actually, intentionally rested — the kind of rest where your mind gets quiet, your shoulders come down from your ears, and your soul finally exhales.
If you can’t remember, this is for you.
You’ve been going and going. Checking off lists. Solving problems. Carrying burdens that were never yours to carry in the first place. And somewhere along the way, you started believing that your worth is measured by how much you get done in a day.
But here’s the truth no one tells you — running on empty doesn’t make you strong. It makes you tired. And God never designed you to live that way.
Sometimes Slowing Down Is How You Finally Catch Up With Your Soul
There’s a quote that stopped me in my tracks, and I think it might do the same for you:
Sometimes slowing down is how you finally catch up with your soul.
Read that one more time. Let it sink in.
You’ve been moving so fast that the most beautiful parts of your life have been passing right by you. The way the morning light comes through your window. The sound of birds outside your door. The answered prayer you almost missed because you were already rushing to the next thing on your list.
Your soul has been trying to get your attention. That heaviness you feel? That exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix? That quiet ache that something is missing even though you can’t name it?
That’s your soul saying, please slow down. I’m still back there. Come find me.
And sweet friend, maybe today is the day you finally listen.
God Never Asked You To Do It All
This is the part where everything shifts if you let it.
You’ve been living like the whole world depends on you. Like if you stop, everything falls apart. Like resting is the same as quitting.
But God never asked you to do it all. He asked you to trust Him with it all.
There’s such a big difference between those two things.
When you try to do it all, you’re carrying a weight that was never meant for your shoulders. When you trust Him with it all, you’re handing that weight to the only One who can actually hold it.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+11%3A28&version=NIV) [DoFollow]
That verse is not a suggestion. It’s not something to cross-stitch on a pillow and forget about. It’s a personal invitation from the God who made you, who sees how tired you are, and who is saying come here. Let Me carry this. You’ve been holding it long enough.
5 Signs God Is Telling You To Slow Down
Sometimes we need it spelled out. Sometimes the signs are right in front of us, but we’re too busy to notice. Here are five signs that God might be asking you to pause:
- You’re exhausted but you can’t sleep. Your body is tired, but your mind won’t stop racing. That’s not just stress — that’s your spirit telling you something needs to change.
- You feel disconnected from the people you love. You’re physically present but emotionally somewhere else. You’re there, but you’re not really there.
- Small things are making you snap. Things that wouldn’t normally bother you are suddenly too much. That short temper isn’t who you are — it’s what burnout looks like.
- You can’t remember the last time you laughed — really laughed. Not a polite chuckle. Not a quick smile. But the kind of laugh that fills your whole body and makes your eyes water.
- Your prayer life feels distant. You’re talking to God but it feels like you’re going through the motions. The connection that used to fill you up feels thin and far away.
If you’re nodding your head right now, sweet friend, please hear me — you are not broken. You’re just running on a tank that’s been empty for too long. And God is gently, lovingly, asking you to pull over and let Him fill you back up.
Slowing Down Is Not Giving Up — It Is Giving In To Grace
The world will tell you that rest is lazy. That slowing down means you’re falling behind. That there’s always more to do, more to prove, more to earn.
But grace says something different.
Grace says you are enough right now. Not when the house is clean. Not when the inbox is empty. Not when everyone else is taken care of. Right now. Just as you are.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+46%3A10&version=NIV) [DoFollow]
Being still doesn’t mean doing nothing. It means doing the brave, countercultural, faith-filled thing of trusting that God is working even when you’re not.
It means believing that the world won’t fall apart if you sit on the porch for ten extra minutes. It means choosing peace over productivity for once. It means remembering that you were never meant to run on empty — you were meant to be filled up by the One who never runs out.
What Happens When You Finally Let Your Soul Catch Up
Something beautiful happens when you slow down. It doesn’t happen all at once, but it happens.
You start noticing things again. The color of the sky. The way your dog looks at you like you’re the whole world. The feeling of warm coffee in your hands on a quiet morning.
You start hearing God again — not because He stopped talking, but because you finally got quiet enough to listen.
You start feeling like yourself again. The woman underneath all the tasks and obligations and pressure. The woman who laughs easily and loves deeply and trusts that God has her, even on the hard days.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.” — Psalm 23:1-3 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm+23%3A1-3&version=NIV) [DoFollow]
He refreshes your soul. Not your schedule. Not your to-do list. Your soul. Because that’s the part of you that matters most to Him.
Give Yourself Permission Today
Sweet friend, I want you to do something for me. Right now, wherever you are, take one deep breath. A real one. The kind that fills your lungs and loosens your chest and makes your shoulders drop.
Now give yourself permission. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Today.
Permission to say no. Permission to rest without guilt. Permission to leave something undone and trust that it will still be there tomorrow. Permission to stop earning your worth and start receiving the love that’s already yours.
You are not behind. You are not failing. You are a woman who has been giving so much of herself that she forgot to save a little for her own heart.
And that ends right now.
This is your sign, sweet friend. Slow down. Let your soul catch up. And watch what God does in the stillness. 💜
