Be Careful What You Call an Ordinary Day
Sweet friend, have you ever ended your evening with a tired sigh and said, “Well, that was just an ordinary day”? I know I have. We say it so easily, and we almost never stop to think about what we’re really saying.
Why We Call It an Ordinary Day Without Thinking
Most of our days don’t come with fireworks. We wake up, make the coffee, do the laundry, answer the emails, and fall into bed. Because nothing dramatic happened, we file the day under “ordinary” and move on.
But here is something I’ve learned over the years: the days we label ordinary are often the very ones we’ll miss the most. When life slows down or changes, we look back and realize that the everyday moments were the real treasure. The kitchen table conversations, the silly laughs, and the familiar voice on the other end of the phone were never small. We just didn’t know it yet.
An Ordinary Day Holds Someone You Love
Let me ask you something, sweet friend. Is there someone you love who is still here? Maybe it’s your mom, your husband, your best friend, your grown kids, or a neighbor who feels like family.
If the answer is yes, then your day is already special. You can still call them. You can still hug them. You can still hear them say your name. That is not ordinary. That is a gift, and a lot of people would give anything for one more phone call or one more hug.
I’m not saying this to make you feel guilty. I’m saying it because I want you to feel how rich you really are right now, in this very moment.
How to Turn an Ordinary Day Into Something Special
The good news is that you don’t need a big plan or a big budget to make a day feel special. A few small things can change the whole feeling of your afternoon:
- Make the call. Don’t text. Pick up the phone and let them hear your voice.
- Give the hug. Hold on a few seconds longer than usual.
- Say the words. Tell someone you love them, and tell them why.
- Sit down together. Have a cup of coffee or tea with no screens and no rush.
- Write a note. A little handwritten card can brighten someone’s whole week.
None of these takes more than a few minutes, but they can stay in a person’s heart for years.
When an Ordinary Day Feels Tender
Now I want to speak gently to those of you who are reading this with a heavy heart. Maybe the person you would call is no longer here, and these words stirred up the missing. I understand, sweet friend, and I’m holding your hand right now.
If that’s you, please be kind to yourself today. You can honor the one you love by living with a grateful heart, sharing their stories, and loving the people who are still beside you. Your love didn’t go anywhere. And remember, you are never alone. God sees you, and He is close to the brokenhearted.
Your Ordinary Day Is a Gift From God
The Bible reminds us, “This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24). Notice that it says this day, not just the big days. Every single one is made by Him, and every single one is meant to be enjoyed.
Elsewhere we’re encouraged to “number our days” so that we gain a wise heart. When we begin to count our days as gifts, a Tuesday morning with a warm mug and a loved one nearby starts to look like the miracle it is.
Let’s Make Today Pretty Special
So here is my challenge to you. Before this day ends, do one small thing to love someone well. Call them, hug them, or send a card. Let them know they matter.
And if you need a little everyday reminder, I’ve created farmhouse-style designs with daisies, gingham, and sweet hearts to bring a smile to your kitchen, your coffee corner, or your front porch. Each one is made to remind you that you are loved and never alone.
Be careful what you call an ordinary day, sweet friend. You may be living one of the best days of your life right now. 💜
Who is someone you’re going to call or hug today? Share in the comments. I’d love to celebrate them with you!
