Johnny’s Gift — The Story Behind the Book and Why I Had to Write It
Sweet friend, I want to sit down with you today and tell you something from my heart. Johnny’s Gift is a Christian military romance novel unlike any other I have written — and today I want to tell you the personal story behind why I wrote it, sweet friend.
I almost did not write Johnny’s story.
When I first started writing Sarah’s Gift, Colonel Johnny Mackenzie was only supposed to be a supporting character — Uncle Johnny, a warm presence in the background of someone else’s love story. But the more I wrote him, the more he came alive on the page. He had this quiet strength, this gentle dignity, this presence that I just could not walk away from. And one day, somewhere in the middle of writing Sarah’s story, I heard that still small voice that I have come to trust — and I knew. Johnny deserves his own story.
So I stopped. And I wrote him one.
Where This Christian Military Romance Novel Began
When I closed my eyes and imagined Colonel Johnny Mackenzie, I saw my own uncle. A man who had served in the military and carried himself in a way that made everyone around him feel safe. That dignified, gentle strength that only certain men have — the kind that comes from having walked through fire and choosing to come out of it with grace and kindness still intact.
There is something about a man like that. Something that does not need to be loud to be powerful. Something that stays with you long after he has left the room. That is Johnny. And I knew from the moment I truly saw him that his story was going to be something special.
Why I Brought Vietnam Into the Story
I brought the Vietnam era into Johnny’s story because I lived a small piece of that world myself.
I once loved a Vietnam veteran. And I watched firsthand — up close and personal — how that war followed him home long after it was over. How it lived in his eyes sometimes. How it shaped the way he moved through the world. Those men gave everything. Absolutely everything. And so many of them came home to silence, or worse, and carried the weight of it alone for the rest of their lives.
I wanted to honor them. I wanted to give at least one of those men — even a fictional one — a story where his gift, his sacrifice, and his heart were truly seen.
If you have ever loved a veteran, sweet friend, this book is for you too.
The Luck of the Irish and the Gifts God Gives Us
Johnny’s gift — that mysterious ability to feel the emotions of everyone around him, what his family calls the luck of the Irish — came straight from my faith.
I believe with my whole heart that God has given every single one of us a gift. Every one of us. Sometimes that gift feels like a burden before it ever feels like a blessing. Sometimes we spend years wondering why we feel things so deeply, or why we seem to carry what others cannot even see. But I have learned, and I hope Johnny’s story shows, that in God’s hands even the heaviest gift becomes something beautiful.
As it says in 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Johnny’s whole life was poured out in service to others through his gift. The question at the heart of this story is whether he will finally let that same grace find him.
What Johnny’s Gift Is About
Colonel Johnny Mackenzie has carried his gift his whole life — the ability to feel the emotions of everyone around him. On the battlefield, it saved the lives of the soldiers under his command. But in the halls of Walter Reed Army Medical Center, surrounded by pain he cannot shield himself from, it is a weight he carries alone.
Then he meets Nurse Marta Simmons — and feels something he has never felt before. A connection so powerful it stops him in his tracks. But Marta’s heart already belongs to another, even as that love slips further away with every passing day.
As Johnny and Marta are drawn together by grief, loss, and the slow work of mending broken hearts, Johnny must decide whether his gift — the one thing that has always set him apart — might also be the very thing that finally lets him belong.
He has spent his whole life feeling what others feel. Now he has to find the courage to feel something for himself.
This Story Was Written for You
Sweet friend, if you have ever felt like your sensitivity was too much. If you have ever poured yourself out for everyone else and wondered who was going to pour back into you. If you have ever loved someone who carried more than they should have had to carry alone — this book is for you.
Johnny’s Gift is a story of faith, healing, and the courage it takes to let yourself be loved. It is a reminder that the greatest gift is not always the one we are given. Sometimes it is the one we finally let ourselves receive.
I poured my whole heart into this one, and I cannot wait for you to meet Johnny.
