Excerpt
As much as we hoped Jack would beat cancer, he didn’t. When he and Cheryl had come back from their cruise, he had come into his office and sat down in the chair across from me. I felt uncomfortable sitting at his desk, while he sat on the other side.
He looked around, noting I had not changed anything. His office was the same as when he left it. “Beth, you really need to start making this your office.”
I could hear the defeat in his voice. “I’m not going to do that. This is your office. You are going to come back to work.”
He had sadly shaken his head. “No, we just came from the doctor’s office. The cancer has spread. I have maybe a few weeks to live.”
I couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down my cheeks. It reminded me of when the doctor told us Sissy only had a few months to live. “I am so sorry.”
“Don’t be,” he said. “I have had a good life. But one thing that truly gives me peace of mind is knowing the company is in good hands with you at the helm. You are doing great things here. I should have listened to you sooner.” His face grew serious. “I need you to make me a promise.”
“Anything.”
“Promise me you will never sell the company back to Charles.”
I could not believe he was asking me to make this promise. “But it is not my company; it belongs to the two of you.”
Jack sadly shook his head no. “I love Charles like he was my own son. But he doesn’t have the heart you do. I see the way you care and interact with the employees. My number one priority has always been to look out for their welfare. I think that’s your priority, too. If he took over, the company would fall apart within a year, because his number one priority has always been himself. That is why I had gone along with his plan to sell the company to you for one dollar. It wasn’t just because we knew Lynette would try to get a piece of it. I needed to give it to someone who would take care of it.”
“But what if Charles asks me to sell it back to him?”
He shook his head, “He won’t.” Then he stood up to leave. “My brother was right when he told me to hire you. I knew from the beginning you were going to be a great asset to this company. Now, before I leave, I need to hear your promise.”
I stood up and walked around the desk to give him a hug, whispering in his ear, “I promise.”

This excerpt sets up a very real dilemma
It does. I think we all get to that point in our life where we ask ourselves, is this what I want to do for the rest of my life?
I hope you have a great day!
Sincerely,
Marilyn
Sounds like she has tough times ahead.
Yes, she has to take a close look at herself and decide what it is she wants in life.
I think we all get to that point in our life where we ask ourselves, is this what I want to do for the rest of my life?
I hope you have a great day!
