Never did I imagine what is currently happening in America. A place that once stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity for so many is now facing profound challenges that impact its citizens and how the world views the ideals it once professed to champion. America, the land where dreams were nurtured, free speech was not just valued but celebrated, and diversity and freedom were seen as strengths, is now grappling with shifts that are hard to comprehend.
This was a nation people flocked to from across the globe, seeking a better life. It was the land where hard work could pave the way for prosperity, where voices of all backgrounds could rise and be heard, and where people’s identities—whether defined by their sexual orientation, race, or other traits—were protected under the notion of equality. It was not perfect, but there was a promise, albeit fragile at times, that progress would prevail over prejudice, and freedom would outshine oppression.
Now it feels as though those promises are eroding. One by one, human rights, which so many fought tirelessly for, are being challenged—or even stripped away entirely. The right to love who you want. The right to bodily autonomy. The right to express your beliefs without fear. These freedoms, once held up as the pillars of a free society, now face relentless doubt and attack. The country that once served as a refuge for those fleeing persecution now risks becoming a place where many fear it for themselves.
Economic instability exacerbates the pain. People who have worked diligently for decades, saving to build futures for their families or enjoy a well-earned retirement, are finding their efforts evaporate overnight. Livelihoods have been upended, and trust in institutions is faltering. Many feel abandoned and helpless. And yet, there remains an expectation that America will continue to be a leader in helping not just its own citizens but the global community. That expectation feels heavy now, as division and turmoil overshadow the nation’s capacity to unify and extend compassion outwardly.
Dear rest of the world, understand this is not the America we hoped for or believed in. For the millions whose values remain rooted in justice, equality, and kindness, this is a somber moment. We are witnesses and participants in a struggle to preserve what it truly means to be free, to uplift the dignity of every human being, and to fight for a better, equitable future. This chapter is painful, but with hope and determination, many of us aspire to see a day when America will once again be able to uphold its principles and fulfill its promise as a place of opportunity, freedom, and light.
