He used his gift to help save his soldiers lives, but could he use it to save his heart?
A novel by Marilyn L. Hart
In the chaos of war, some gifts cannot be explained. They can only be trusted.
Colonel Johnny Mackenzie arrived at Walter Reed Army Medical Center carrying more than his wounds from Vietnam. He carried a gift he had never asked for and didn’t fully understand — an ability to feel other people’s emotions, to know when danger was coming, to know what others couldn’t see.
Growing up, his mother had lovingly called this gift “The Luck of the Irish.” Johnny had never been so sure. There was nothing lucky about carrying the weight of knowing. But on the battlefields of Vietnam, that gift had kept men alive who should have died — and that was something he thanked God for every day.
Now at Walter Reed, the war was supposed to be behind him. But the gift didn’t rest just because he did. And neither did his heart — because nothing in his life had prepared him for Marta Simmons. The quietly strong Army nurse who saw past his rank, past his wounds, past every wall he had carefully built — and straight into the heart he was so desperate to protect.
Marta had her own reasons for keeping her distance. She had learned the hard way that loving a soldier meant learning to let go. But something about Johnny was different. Something she couldn’t explain and couldn’t ignore.
Set against the backdrop of one of America’s most turbulent eras, Johnny’s Gift is a story about the courage it takes to trust what God has placed inside you — and the even greater courage it takes to open your heart when everything in you says to keep it closed.
✝️ A NOTE FROM MY HEART
Sweet friend, Colonel Johnny Mackenzie’s story has been with me for a long time. There is something about the Vietnam era that has always moved me deeply — the way those young men and women served with everything they had, and came home to a world that didn’t always know how to receive them. I wanted to honor that sacrifice in the pages of this book.
But at its heart, this is a story about gifts — the ones God places inside us that we don’t always understand, and sometimes don’t even want. Johnny’s gift frightened him. It set him apart. It made him feel different in ways he couldn’t explain to anyone. And yet God had given it to him for a reason.
And then there was Marta. Strong, compassionate, and guarded for good reason — she had loved and lost and wasn’t sure her heart could survive another goodbye. But God had other plans for her too.
Sweet friend, maybe you know that feeling. Maybe God has placed something inside you — a calling, a sensitivity, a way of seeing the world — that you’ve been afraid to fully embrace. Can I gently encourage you today? That gift is not a burden. It is a blessing, placed inside you on purpose by a God who knew exactly what He was doing.
And like Johnny and Marta, you may find that the very things you’ve been protecting yourself from are the very things God is using to lead you home.
I pray this story stirs your heart and reminds you that God’s gifts and God’s love are always given in love.
With love and faith always, Marilyn 🌿
